Pork lovers in Luzon and Visayas, and likewise Mindanao farmers have reasons to be happy in the coming days as their surplus hogs, pork, and pork by-products are now allowed entry in Cebu City and Southern Leyte, and onto Metro Manila and other areas in Luzon.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe commend Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado for issuing respective executive orders, lifting the ban on hogs, pork, and pork by-products from Mindanao, and allowing these to be traded, processed and consumed, benefiting their constituents and processors alike,\u201d said agriculture secretary William Dar.<\/p>\n
Mayor Labella issued Executive Order No. 072, on April 28, 2020, lifting the ban on live hogs, pork, and pork by-products in Cebu City.<\/p>\n
For his part, Governor Mercado issued EO No. 26, on April 30, 2020, allowing the entry and pass-through of ASF-free hogs, pork, pork by-products, via Liloan Port, a vital link in the country\u2019s \u201cnautical highway.\u201d<\/p>\n
Liloan Port connects Southern Leyte to Visayas and Mindanao, and to Samar via San Juanico Bridge onto Matnog, Sorsogon, Luzon\u2019s southern gateway.<\/p>\n
The DA earlier received commitments from hog raisers in Davao, General Santos GenSan) and Cagayan de Oro (CDO) cities that they have surplus hogs and frozen pork, aptly called \u201cpork-in-a-box,\u201d initially amounting to 1.7 million kilograms (kg) or 1,700 metric tons (MT) ready to be shipped to Cebu, Leyte, and Luzon.<\/p>\n
Eduardo So, president of Hog Farmers Association of Davao, Inc., in a published statement said \u201cit was the association who offered to supply pork, as we have a lot of surplus here in Mindanao.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe decision to supply pork to Luzon is not only ours in Davao region but also from other hog farmers in Mindanao,\u201d said So, highlighting that \u201cit is our simple way of saying \u2018Support local farmers first\u2019 instead of prioritizing imported meat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chester Warren Tan, president and chairman of the National Federation of Hog Farmers, Inc., said \u201cour members in General Santos City are ready to ship \u2018pork-in-a-box\u2019 initially at 20 to 30 20-foot refrigerated containers to Luzon.\u201d<\/p>\n
DA Undersecretary Evelyn Lavina, who along with DA Undersecretary Zamzamin Ampatuan were tasked by secretary Dar to coordinate with Mindanao hog raisers, said Davao committed to supply around 500 MT of pork monthly, while those in GenSan and CDO can ship 3,000 MT monthly to Visayas and Luzon.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn all, we hope other local chief executives will consider freeing their borders and allowing unhampered movement of not only ASF-free hogs and pork, but also other farm and fishery products to maintain stable food supply and prices, thus benefiting all players in the food supply chain, most particularly small farmers fishers, livestock and poultry raisers, and likewise urban consumers,\u201d concluded secretary Dar. ### (Noel Reyes, DA StratComms)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
